Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus, lived during the first century B.C. in the Holy Land. While Scripture does not record their names, tradition preserved them as Joachim and Anne. They longed for children but endured many years of barrenness, which in their culture was considered a source of shame. Through fervent prayer and trust in God, they were blessed in their later years with a daughter—Mary—who would become the Mother of God. As the ones chosen to raise and form the Blessed Virgin, Joachim and Anne are honored for their faith, perseverance, and loving example as parents. Their feast is celebrated on July 26, and they are venerated as patrons of parents and grandparents throughout the Church.
Practical Lessons
- Persevere in Prayer: Joachim and Anne waited many years for their prayers to be answered. In our lives, when God seems silent, we can continue to pray with faith and trust that His timing is perfect.
- Value Family Formation: Their example shows the importance of creating a home where faith is nurtured. Today, this can mean praying as a family, reading Scripture together, or passing on traditions that root children in God’s love.
- Honor the Elderly: As grandparents of Jesus, Joachim and Anne remind us to value the wisdom and presence of older generations. We can visit grandparents, call elderly relatives, or learn from their stories as a way of honoring their role in our lives.
Prayer
Sts. Joachim and Anne, holy parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, intercede for us that we may persevere in prayer, cherish the gift of family, and honor the wisdom of those who came before us. Pray that we may form our homes in faith and prepare the next generation to know and love Christ. Amen.
